Building Over a Buried Valley
Excavation contractors in Fairfield work on the east bank of the Great Miami River in Butler County. Most of the city lies over the Great Miami Buried Valley Aquifer, a major underground source that supplies drinking water for Fairfield, Hamilton and Cincinnati. Fairfield incorporated in 1955 and grew fast: from 9,734 residents in 1960 to 30,777 in 1980. The 2020 census counted 44,907 residents and 19,030 housing units on about 20.8 square miles.
Protecting the aquifer
Because the aquifer feeds drinking water for a large region, we take spills, fuel handling and fill sources seriously. Clean fill, contained fueling and proper erosion control matter more here than in most places.
Valley soils
Near the river, buried valley deposits are often sandier and better drained than the upland clays, while higher ground has more clay. That changes how drains and ponds behave from one side of the city to the other, so we test before designing.
1970s and 1980s homes
Many homes date from the 1970s boom, when population more than doubled. Laterals, driveways and backyard grading from that era are now due for work.
Parks and open ground
Harbin Park, at 230 acres, is the largest of the city's more than 500 acres of parkland. Lots that border parks or open land often take runoff from them, and on clay uplands that water sits against foundations. We look at where the water enters the lot and intercept it with a swale or curtain drain before it reaches the house, then send it to an outlet that does not just push the problem to a neighbor.

Fairfield Questions
Does the aquifer limit what I can build?
Some uses are regulated over wellfields. For typical residential digging, the main concerns are clean fill and avoiding spills.
Are soils sandy in Fairfield?
Near the river they can be. Higher ground has more clay. We check before designing drains or ponds.
Do you work in Butler County?
Yes. Fairfield, West Chester and Hamilton are in our area.
Can you work near the river bottoms?
Yes. We check floodplain status and groundwater before planning a dig there.
Do you haul fill in?
Yes, and in Fairfield we make sure imported fill is clean, given the aquifer below.
