A River City With Deep History

Excavation contractors in Hamilton work in the Butler County seat on the Great Miami River, about 20 miles north of Cincinnati. The city had 63,399 residents and 27,392 housing units in 2020 on about 21.5 square miles of land, at an elevation of about 587 feet. Its three historic districts, Dayton Lane, German Village and Rossville, hold some of the oldest housing in the region.

The 1913 flood

In March 1913, heavy rain sent the Great Miami over its banks. About 360 people died across the valley, about 200 of them in Hamilton, and the water destroyed all four of the city's bridges within two hours. Flood control and floodplain rules still shape what can be built and filled near the river.

Old neighborhoods

Homes in the historic districts have old foundations, clay laterals and tight lots. Lateral replacement, foundation dig-outs and garage teardowns are common. Close to the river, water tables are higher and digs may need dewatering.

City of Sculpture

Hamilton declared itself the City of Sculpture in 2000, and installations dot downtown. Work near public art and downtown sidewalks is planned for access and protection.

German Village and Dayton Lane

The Lane Public Library, built in 1866, sits in German Village, and the Butler County Courthouse dates from 1885 to 1889. Neighborhoods around them have brick and frame houses on narrow lots with alleys and detached garages. Access often comes from the alley, and we use compact machines and hand digging near old walls. When a lateral or water line crosses a sidewalk, we follow the city's restoration requirements.
