Working in a Landmark Village
Excavation contractors in Greenhills work in one of only three Greenbelt Communities built by the federal Resettlement Administration in the 1930s, alongside Greenbelt, Maryland and Greendale, Wisconsin. The village was planned with a surrounding belt of woodland and natural landscaping. It is small, about 1.2 square miles with 3,741 residents and 1,618 housing units in 2020, at about 801 feet.
Historic Landmark
The original government-built area is listed on the National Register and is a National Historic Landmark, covering about three-quarters of the village. Work that changes what is visible, like new garages or major grading, may need review. Underground work like lateral repairs usually does not change appearance, but we check before scheduling.
1930s construction
Homes built in the late 1930s are now close to ninety years old. Original sewer laterals, footing drains and walks are often worn out. We dig carefully near old foundations and restore landscaping that is part of the planned village character.
Woodland edges
Many lots back onto the greenbelt woods. Runoff from those areas, plus slow-draining clay, makes curtain drains and regrading useful.
Planned walks and greens
Greenhills was designed with walkways, greens and shared landscaping as part of the plan. When a lateral or utility trench crosses those areas, careful restoration keeps the village's planned look intact. We cut neat trench lines, save sod where possible and replace walks to match. The village hall is the historic James Whallon House, also on the National Register.
