Small Lots on a Big Slope
Excavation contractors in Mount Adams work on one of Cincinnati's most famous hills, immediately east of downtown, with Eden Park on its northern edge. The neighborhood is small, with 1,578 residents and 1,146 housing units in the 2020 census, but its slopes are steep and its history with ground movement is serious. Every job here starts with a careful look at the hillside.
The 1974 slide
A landslide on Mount Adams in 1974 pushed up its toe so far that it lifted sidewalk slabs over the curb. USGS researchers reported nearly $30 million spent after 1978 on that single landslide, more than all other Hamilton County slides combined over the previous six years. The lesson for any excavator is plain: cutting, filling and redirecting water on this hill must be done carefully and often with an engineer.
Access and staging
Narrow, winding streets, steps and on-street parking leave little room for equipment or trucks. We use the smallest machine that can do the work, hand dig where needed, and plan when trucks can load without blocking the street.
What gets dug here
Most work is small in footprint: drainage and downspout lines, wall repairs, utility trenches, and foundation work for renovations. On a slope like this, small jobs still get a full review of where water goes and how a cut affects the ground above.
Working near Eden Park
Eden Park, home to the Krohn Conservatory, the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Playhouse in the Park, borders the neighborhood. Event days bring traffic, so we schedule around them.

Mount Adams Questions
Do I need an engineer for work on Mount Adams?
For anything beyond small drainage or utility work, often yes. Given the hill's history, we recommend a geotechnical review for significant cuts, fill or walls.
Can you fit equipment on these streets?
Compact excavators and hand digging handle most jobs. We plan access and truck timing before we start.
Is drainage really that important here?
Yes. Water is involved in most slope movement, so carrying roof and yard water safely off the hill is a priority.
