Getting Lines From Here to There

Utility and septic trenching means digging the narrow, accurate trenches that carry water, sewer, gas, electric and septic lines. It includes new service lines for a house or outbuilding, replacement sewer laterals, conduit to a detached garage or pool, and lines for septic systems on properties outside sewer service. The trench is simple to describe and easy to get wrong: wrong depth, wrong slope, a nicked existing line or poor backfill all cause trouble later.

Paint and flags first

Before any trench, we file an Ohio 811 ticket, which state law requires at least two working days ahead. Each utility marks its own line in a set color: red for power, yellow for gas, orange for phone and cable, blue for water, green for sewer. We outline our own dig area in white and switch to hand tools near every mark.

Sewer laterals and water lines

Replacing a cracked or root-filled sewer lateral often means an open trench from the house to the connection. HomeAdvisor lists sewer line work at $1,388 to $5,323 for a typical project, $60 to $250 per linear foot for replacement and $4 to $12 per linear foot for trenching alone. Water lines need enough cover to stay below frost and a clean bedding.

Septic lines

On larger lots in the outer suburbs and Clermont, Warren and Butler county townships, homes may rely on septic systems. We dig trenches and excavation for tanks and lines to the approved design and work alongside the installer. Septic permits and designs come through the local health department; we follow the approved plan.

Trenches in rock and clay

Shale and limestone layers can turn a simple trench into rock work. Clay holds water and can cave when it dries or soaks. Any trench over about five feet deep is sloped, benched or boxed under OSHA rules.

Backfill

Pipe is bedded in stone or sand, and backfill goes in compacted layers so the trench does not sink. We restore the surface with topsoil and seed or base for paving.

Utility & Septic Trenching Questions

Do you install the pipe or just dig?

We dig, bed and backfill. Licensed plumbers, electricians or septic installers make the connections where required, and we coordinate with them.

How deep do water lines go?

Deep enough to stay below frost, as set by the local code and utility. We dig to the required depth.

Can you trench through rock?

Yes. Rock slows the work and adds cost, and we price it once we know how much is there.

What about my lawn?

We keep the trench narrow, stack topsoil separately and put it back on top, then seed.
