Early 1900s Homes on a Steep Hill
Excavation contractors in Price Hill work across three neighborhoods on the hill west of downtown: East Price Hill, West Price Hill and Lower Price Hill. Together they had 36,271 residents in 2020, with about 16,400 housing units, and many of the houses still standing were built in the early 1900s. The hill was so hard to reach that an incline railway once climbed 350 feet from 8th Street and Glenway Avenue to the top.
Fill on the edges
USGS researchers studying Cincinnati landslides found thick slides with their heads in the fill along the downhill edge of Delhi Pike, the road that runs west from Price Hill. The same pattern applies on private lots: fill pushed over the edge of a hillside yard is a common starting point for movement. We bench and compact any fill and keep it back from slope edges.
Century-old houses
Homes from the early 1900s come with clay laterals, stone foundations, settled backfill and old retaining walls. Typical work includes lateral replacement, foundation dig-outs for waterproofing, curtain drains on uphill sides and replacing leaning walls with properly drained ones.
Lower Price Hill
Lower Price Hill sits in the river valley southwest of East Price Hill, with Mill Creek forming its border with Queensgate. Low ground near the creek and river brings higher water tables and floodplain considerations.
Views and parks
Mount Echo Park, established in 1908 on 73 acres, has one of the best views of the city. Lots near park edges and overlooks are often among the steepest.

Price Hill Questions
My backyard wall is leaning. Can you replace it?
Yes. We remove the old wall in sections, support the slope, and excavate for a new wall with proper drainage, working with the wall builder.
Do you replace sewer laterals in Price Hill?
Yes. Many early 1900s homes still have clay laterals that are cracked or root-filled.
Can I level my sloped yard?
Partly, usually with a wall and benched fill. We show you what is safe on your slope.
